Help Horizon Realty Pack Meals and Provide Books for Alachua’s Children!

Every day, too many children in our community face hunger and limited access to educational resources. Hunger Fight, a Florida-based nonprofit, is on a mission to end childhood hunger and illiteracy through hands-on meal packing events and monthly book distribution.

Their Feed the Backpacks program provides weekend meals to children on the Federal Free and Reduced Meal Plan, while Feed the Need to Read delivers age‑appropriate books to preschoolers living in “book deserts.”

Nationwide, nearly 1 in 4 children doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from. Right here in Alachua County, Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap reports that approximately 9,570 children—nearly 19% of local kids—are food insecure, with families facing an average meal cost of $4.02 and a staggering $32.5 million annual food budget shortfall. Many of these students attend Title I schools, where at least 40% of children come from low-income households.

On Saturday, August 9, Hunger Fight will host the 8th Annual Alachua County Community Outreach Event. Volunteers will pack thousands of nutritious meals for local Title I elementary students and provide books to preschoolers in need. Each table of 10 volunteers can pack 2,300–2,500 meals and provide 80 new books in just two hours.

Horizon Realty of Alachua is stepping up with a $1,000 fundraising goal to sponsor one table at the event. Your donation helps ensure our team can participate—and more importantly, it directly supports hungry children and early literacy right here in Alachua County.
